Carmen Sawyer is the mother of Annie Sawyer. Seeking closure about her daughter's death, she attended a psychic reading held by stage psychic Alan Cortez, at the same time that Annie was helping him deal with his weakened gift. During this meeting, Annie was able to say goodbye to her mother through Cortez, assuring her that she was real and well by folding a paper rose for her mother (A trick that Annie had learned from a Blue Peter sketch).
